Lee, who recently retired after an extensive career as a cartoonist and illustrator, has compiled a selection of over 200 pen-and-ink portraits of notable black Americans, mostly 20th-century figures. These individual drawings, along with short biographical sketches, are taken from Lee's "Interesting People" feature, which appeared, beginning in 1945, in a number of major black newspapers. Arranged chronologically, the collection is wide-ranging, including political leaders, musicians, sports figures, scientists, writers, and members of the armed services; there is extensive coverage of women and lesser-known individuals, as well. This makes fascinating reading and contains many little-known facts about a number of influential black Americans. Recommended mainly for school and public libraries, this would also be for the general reader interested in finding out information about blacks' contribution to American history.
